Daniel Bonner

Partner, Client Solutions
Biography

If there is one term that describes Daniel Bonner, it’s a “resource.” He has spent his entire career in the digital forensics, eDiscovery, and managed review space, giving him a full-spectrum perspective on the modern discovery challenges attorneys face.

As a Partner, Client Solutions at Level Legal, Daniel holds a unique role that is equal parts consultative and operational. He supports law firms and in-house legal teams on discovery strategy for civil litigation, second requests, government investigations, internal compliance, and much more, while also serving as an educational resource for the eDiscovery lifecycle, from collection to production.

Daniel joined Level Legal right out of law school and is proud to say he’s held just about every role in the company across his career—from review manager to eDiscovery analyst to director of client solutions. He has personally managed 250+ complex review and eDiscovery projects.

He has touched projects of all sizes, from as small as two team members to as large as several hundred. Daniel regularly consults clients on the nuts and bolts of discovery strategy, workflow and process sequencing, efficiency goals, and cost management. Additionally, his entrepreneurial spirit was instrumental in the growth of Level Legal from a small, one-project team to appearing on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies.

Daniel frequently shares knowledge from his nearly two decades in eDiscovery and review.

He is a regular speaker at industry trade shows, bar associations, law firm and in-house CLE presentations, and co-hosts Level Legal’s Level Table Live podcast. He also has appeared on other industry podcasts and been quoted in publications, including Law360, eDiscovery Today, Above the Law, and Law.com. Recognizing his expertise in the industry, EDRM included Daniel on the EDRM 2.0 Advisory Committee, which is assessing the current eDiscovery Reference Model and updating it to reflect industry maturity and current workflows.

Being naturally curious and maybe a little obsessive has served Daniel well in his career, but it’s also something he carries through to his hobbies. Whether he’s smoking meat in his backyard, working on vehicles and rebuilding engines, or coaching his kids in basketball or softball, he turns it into a science. In his work at Level Legal, he’s been able to learn about the timber industry, organic farming, Faraday cages, and maritime law, just to name a few.

“Discovery is a verb,” he says, and one of his favorite things about his personal and professional lives is trying new things and learning.

That passion for knowledge is why Daniel is best described as a resource. When it comes to evaluating his own effectiveness, the most important metric he looks at is trust. When someone calls him asking for advice or help, whether it’s a Level Legal project or not, he knows he’s done his job right. For Daniel, being a trusted partner to our clients means understanding outcomes and providing guidance and resources to achieve those outcomes.

Daniel understands the intricacies of effective discovery project management and communication because he’s lived it.

Our Framework

Understand.

During this phase, we work to step away from any assumptions and guesses about what our customers needs, and let our research findings inform our decision-making. We learn more about our customers, their problems, wants, and needs, and the environment or context in which they will use the solution we offer.

Our Framework

Define.

During the Define phase, we analyze our research findings from the Understand phase and determine what is the most important problem to solve — and why. This step defines the goal. Then we can give a clear problem statement, describing what our customers’ needs are that we are trying to solve, making sure that we heard and defined their problem correctly.

Our Framework

Solve.

This phase is an important part of the discipline in our process. People often settle for the first solution, but the most obvious solution is often not the right one. During the Solve phase, we brainstorm collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to generate many unique solutions. We then analyze our potential solutions and make choices about which are the best to pursue based on learnings in the Understand phase.

Our Framework

Build & Test.

This phase is critical in developing the right solution to our customers’ problem. An organized approach to testing can help avoid rework and create exceptional outcomes. Starting small and testing the solution, we iterate quickly, before deploying solutions across the entire project.

Our Framework

Act.

During this phase, the hard work of prior phases comes to life in our customers’ best solution. The research, collaboration, and testing performed prior to project kick-off ensure optimal results.

Our Framework

Feedback.

At the project completion, we convene all stakeholders to discuss what went well, what could have been better, and how we might improve going forward. We call these meetings “Retrospectives,” and we perform them internally as a project team, and with our external customers. The Retrospective is one of the most powerful, meaningful tools in our framework.
